In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to find a good website on Flippa marketplace. The Flippa website is a great place to buy websites, fix them up and resell them for a higher price. However, there are certain things that you need to pay close attention to.
There are many ways to improve the value of a domain and you can check out some of the tutorials that I have written on how to monetize your website here.
Feel free to use the table of content below to jump to the section which you are most interested in.
What to Look For in the Flippa Marketplace
So hop on to the Flippa marketplace and found a website you want to buy. The first thing you want to do is to research, because that will save you a lot of headache down the road. I can’t over stress the importance of research.
The Website Traffic & Bounce Rates
Have a look at the domain name of the website you are interested in buying.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Is the domain name something simple and memorable?
- Is the domain name catchy?
Next, have a look at the stats of the flippa domain that you are keen to buy. What kind of traffic does it have? Is traffic consistent and steady? Are there any organic search engine traffic?
Just a quick clarification about what is organic search engine traffic. This is traffic that comes naturally to the flippa website that you wish to purchase.
Let me show you an example below.
If you look at this picture above which I extracted from the flippa marketplace, you can see that it is getting about 51% of its traffic via organic search. If you count direct ie someone just enters the domain URL straight as organic, then this flippa domain site is really good with organic traffic making up 77% of the total traffic.
You also want to pay attention to the bounce rate since it tells you how good the flippa domain website is good at maintaining visitorship. The lower the better. In this case, this flippa website has a really good bounce rate.
Checking the site speed of a website in the flippa marketplace can be done easily. Simply head to GT Metrix, enter the flippa website you wish to purchase and it will give you a comprehensive report.
This comprehensive report will show you all the information you need to optimise your site. Remember that site loading speed is an important factor for ranking your website on Google, so make sure to find out if the website listed on the Flippa marketplace has good site loading speed.
If it doesn’t, that doesn’t mean that you can’t purchase this website on the Flippa marketplace. It just means that you need to spend some time to optimise the Flippa website that you purchased.
Taking a Look at Google Webmasters Account
Because the Flippa marketplace does not have data about the keywords that the domain is ranking for, you want to ask the seller for restricted access.
A good legit seller should have no qualms revealing this to you. If the seller isn’t agreeable, this might be a sign that he has something to hide.
Gaining restricted access to the flippa domain you wish to buy will give you a good indication about what it is ranking for.
Consider Domain’s Monetisation Strategy
Have a look at how the Flippa domain is making money. This is crucial because if you wish to flip the website, the only way is to improve it and have it generate more revenue.
Without understanding how revenue is generated with the Flippa website and thinking through what you are going to do to improve the monetisation strategy, it is very hard to flip the domain. Unless you are just going for the passive income and not intending to grow the website, then make sure to look into this.
Crafting a Business Plan
Once you have looked through each of the above pointers, its time to formulate a business plan before purchasing the website from the Flippa marketplace.
Here’s a brief guide that I used for one of the sites I bought:
- Fix up site loading time
- Stop showing adsense since I plan to monetize it via affiliate links
- Tweak the theme and show a sitebar with banners of affiliate products
- Outsource my content creation and upload articles 3 times a week
- Start posting on niche related blogs and forums (explained in my other article here)
I would monetize the website I purchased from Flippa by:
- Using affiliate links
- Writing product reviews and throwing in bonuses
